Review: Motorola Droid Pro

Via www.TheBlackBerryZone.com
Image
When I heard about the Droid Pro with its keyboard combo with touch screen, I knew immediately that I wanted to play with this device. Therefore, after talking to Verizon, they sent me a demo to play with and by far, it is one of my favorite devices out. After saying that though, a few things did stand out on the device that I had problems with. Hit the break for the full review.
Most of you know I am a major BlackBerry advocator, so moving to an Android 1 GHz phone for two weeks was interesting. Obviously, the biggest change is the operating system. Moving from a 9650 with BlackBerry 6 running semi-smooth to Android 2.2 running extremely smooth, proved most of my friends with Android friends right, it is a better performing phone. Saying that, though, I was very thankful to move back to my 9650 after two weeks, it just felt right for me.
First thing you will notice when you unbox your brand new Droid Pro, is how solid the device feels. Being a BlackBerry addict, I know all too well about size and weight of a Smartphone. Having said that, I never got the feeling the phone was bringing down my pants due to its weight or that it looked like I was squeezing a tablet into my pocket due to its size. In comparison, it is smaller than the Bold 9650 but longer by about a third of an inch. In addition, it feels (though I do not have the exact weight) lighter than my 9650, which was good and bad at the same time for me.
Image
As I said earlier, the main attraction for me on this phone was having a physical keyboard. Whether it is the size of my thumbs or my just overall coordination, I have the worst luck with touch-screen keyboards. Lucky for me, the keyboard on the Pro is exactly like the BlackBerry’s signature keyboard as far as looks and feel (they have the curved keys from the Bold for easier typing). Although it has the same looks and feel esthetically, once you begin to type on it you really feel the difference. I, full out, was not a fan of the typing on it. The buttons did not react as well when typing and sometimes (often) you would push a key and nothing would happen, very disappointed. In addition, the cramped area designated for the keyboard really takes getting used to.
Battery life seemed to do very well on the Droid Pro actually, and that was a major win in my eyes. Not having the extended battery I know have in my 9650, I was used to mediocre at best battery life. I was able to run a full day and a half after a full charge without it dying, and that is with more than decent use.
Image
A big con for me was the screen size. Yes, it is touch-screen and multi-touch, but whenever I used an app or browsed the web on it, it really felt like too much was being squeezed onto the 3.1-inch screen. Although I could live with apps being squeezed, the web browsing experience was horrible to say the least for me. The speed, fantastic; the pinch-and-zoon capabilities, flawless; being able to see what in the world you are looking at, a bogie. I would rather put up with the slow speeds of BlackBerry 6’s Webkit browser and be able to see with good ability what the site is suppose to look like, than to do a good amount of googling on the Droid Pro.
When running benchmarks on the device, it ranked higher than any other Android Smartphone, which was a good sign, but I did have trouble with occasional lag (though that is to be expected).
Overall, I liked the device for its looks and OS, once I dove deeper into the device and its keyboard I almost resented it. I told a few friends that I might have been sold on the whole Android is better than BlackBerry thing, but after living solely on the Droid Pro for three weeks and then returning to my trusty 9650 with BB6, I have to say I was glad to be back. I think Android runs better on other devices and I think it is a fantastic OS (beats the heck out of iOS for sure), but the size of the screen and the keyboard blew it for me. I tried to get used to it thinking it is just because I have been on BlackBerry for so long, but I never could and I do not think I ever will. I hope that the next Android device I review will present its OS in a better light, because I believe it definitely has one.

BlackBerry Messenger 5.08

BlackBerry Messenger 5.08

I’ve been getting some emails and BBM messages asking where the links where, they are still up, I had to move some of the files around on my server so some of the old links may not be valid, but here are the updated links plus a few more versions that have been floating around for some of the new 5.0 OSs. At first there where alot of bad reports but all versions seem to be working great after RIM switched on all the features. If your worried about losing your contacts, here’s a great tip from one of the commenter’s, not sure if it works but it’s worth the try.
After the installation finishes, don’t select “Reboot Device” Select No or whatever the other option is, back out to your homescreen, the reboot the handheld manually by either a battery pull, or quick pull or some other third party app. *Tip: hold left alt, right shift and del at the same time for a couple of seconds to reboot also.*
This has apparently been a workaround for losing your contacts, let me know in comments below if it works for you.

****THIS IS BETA SOFTWARE, INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK. MAKE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR PHONE FIRST. IF YOU DOWNLOAD ANY OF THESE AND IT DOESN’T WORK, IT WILL PROBABLY REMOVE YOUR BLACKBERRY MESSENGER ALL TOGETHER, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CONTACTS OR BRICK YOUR PHONE. LG officially unveils its new Chocolate, the BL40

LG officially unveils its new Chocolate, the BL40

LG officially unveiled the latest addition to its Black Label series, the BL40 Chocolate. A bit of deja vu as this handset has already starred in its own photo shoot and made its unofficial YouTube debut. The red-trimmed handset has a 4-inch wide screen 800×345 pixel display with a unique 21:9 aspect ratio, 5 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, 7.2Mbps UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, and aGPS. As far as release details, unfortunately all we know about this sleek and sexy handset is that it will debut in Q3 2009 in 54 countries worldwide. All else aside, we can’t wait to see how typing on this bad boy works out considering how long and thin it is. Hit the jump for a few more press photos.

Samsung Jet announcement!

Video: Samsung Jet announcement makes me want one of these!

Don’t know how we missed this video from Samsung’s Jet announcement, but it’s cool and we’re going with it, even if we’re late. The clip is Minority Report-like and apparently Samsung used technology from Korean firm D’strict. It combines infrared motion sensing and 3D imagery a la Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Natal… Enough said, push the play button above, if you still haven’t!

Smartest Cover for the BlackBerry Storm

Clear Shots: Smartest Cover for the BlackBerry Storm

After I mentioned the ‘Smartest Cover’ for the BlackBerry Storm yesterday, I wasn’t too surprised to wake up and notice an email from the team over at Smartest Cover. I had raised concerns directly to them about the lack of quality images of the product… and sure enough, they came through for me. Hopefully these images give a clear picture of how the ‘cover’ works. You can see the raised bumps, much like the ‘F’ and ‘J’ keys carry on most keyboards.
I can’t say for certain that the covers will work, but having used a Storm for some time now, I can’t see it hurting at all. If anything, I’d guess moderate to large gains in typing speed and accuracy would be realized (just a hunch).

Again, if you’d like to learn more or pick up a package of 3 for $13.99, head on over to smartestcover.com. Landscape and SureType versions are available.

Poll: Which Currently Available or Announced BlackBerry Smartphone do you Own or Plan to Buy?

Poll: Which Currently Available or Announced BlackBerry Smartphone do you Own or Plan to Buy?

How is it that we've never run a poll here on the blogs?
That just seems soooo wrong. It's time to change that! I think we can have a lot of fun here by running both standalone polls and by tieing polls in at the end of blog posts.
So get your polling thumbs ready....
It only makes sense for our first poll that we start with the basics... which BlackBerry do you currently own or plan to buy. Now..I know a lot of you either own multiple BlackBerry smartphones or are using an upcoming device that you shouldn't really be using. So if you own multiple devices or are about to upgrade, pick the one you're using/plan to be using the most. And if you're lucky enough to be rocking a model that err.. doesn't exist yet (onyx anyone??) then just pick the Older or Other BlackBerry option...

Every so often here, we go over BlackBerry quick tips, little tidbits that can make your BlackBerry life easier. Some of these are more advanced, but we also like to go over the basics. Today is one of those instances. In searching through the site yesterday, I realized we didn’t have a bit on how to delete applications from your BlackBerry. So after the jump we’ll go through the basic process.

First, go to Options.
Then, go to Advanced Options.
Finally, click on Applications.

You’ll see a notice that your BlackBerry is building an applications list. On the other end you’ll see a big huge list, containing core applications and some things you might not recognize. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: if you do not know what it is, do not delete it.
Scroll down to find the application you’d like to delete. Once it’s highlighted, hit the Menu key. You’ll see a number of options, but all we’re interested in now is the obvious one: Delete. Click it, and you’ll get confirmation. Click Yes, and it will delete the application.
Afterward you’ll be prompted to reset your BlackBerry. If you plan to delete multiple applications, say no. Say yes after the last application you’re going to delete. A reset clears the application out of device memory.
