Sony Ericsson Vivaz ProSony Ericsson’s Vivaz Pro is one of the newest devices to join Rogers, loaded with the ability to play 720p HD videos, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and touch-screen navigation.
The Vivaz Pro is what is called a Quick Messaging Device, or QMD for short – perfect if you put text messaging above all other features. Sure there are other things you can do with the phone, but SMS sits atop the list.
If you’ve never heard of QMD before now, here’s a primer:
What is a QMD?
A QMD is an “in-between” line of cellphones. Most have a full QWERTY keyboard for fast, easy messaging, some have touch screens and offer data services such as messaging, email and web access.
First launched in early 2009, the LG Neon was one of the original QMD devices along with the Samsung Gravity and Samsung Propel. Since then, the popularity of QMDs has grown rapidly in Canada and Rogers carries many of them, including the Samsung Corby ProLG Xenon and Nokia Surge.
Do QMDs require a data plan?
While QMDs offer some of the great functionality of a smartphone, they do not require a data plan. However, if you don’t have a data on your QMD, it doesn’t mean you can’t access the Internet. There’s always the option of a Rogers Mobile Internet Pass for short-term, occasional mobile internet access.
Who would use a QMD?
QMDs are perfect for people who use messaging as their primary device feature -  from newbies to SMS fanatics. The devices are designed to allow people to send text, picture, video and instant messages with ease.
