Motorola to unveil Android phones in September for Verizon and T-Mobile

Motorola to unveil Android phones in September for Verizon and T-Mobile

The stakes are high for Motorola. Many people have questioned if their bet on Android can turn the company around. I’m no Wall Street analyst, but I’m here to tell you the answer is yes.
Imagine the following scenario: Verizon, America’s largest wireless carrier, releases Motorola’s first Android phone (based on the Snapdragon platform) just in time for the crucial holiday shopping season. Would that get you excited?

It might sound far fetched, but it is closer to reality than you think. Motorola has told everyone they are making Android phones, but have been very tight lipped about the actual handsets. Reports had placed the rumored Motorola Calgary as Verizon’s first Android phone, but it was unclear on the exact specs or time frame of the device.
The picture got a little clearer today when new images of the Motorola “Sholes” were leaked by a Russian fan site. The design is an updated version of the Calgary renders we saw and now has the Verizon logo clearly displayed on the front. The specs were impressive, but conveniently left out the CPU.

Highlight of the Motorola “Sholes” include:

3.7-inch touch-sensitive display with a resolution 480×854 pixels

Memory 512 MB Flash ROM / 256 MB RAM / micro SDHC slot

Camera 5 MP with auto focus

Dimensions 60.00 x 115.80 x 13.70 mm

Weight 169g

Battery Li-ion 1400mAh

3.5 mm headphone jack

802.11g WiFi

Expect more details of the phone soon. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha said on Thursday’s quarterly earnings call that we would see their first devices soon. “Around mid september time frame, we hope to be able to let you play with these (Android) devices more and get your feedback as to
where you think it fits into the marketplace.”

Mr. Jha made it clear the phones will go on sale in the 4th quarter. “We will have two Android devices in stores for the holiday season. We have deals that are signed and we will launch with two major carriers in North America and multiple carriers outside the US.”

All signs point to Verizon launching the Motorola “Sholes” and T-Mobile offering the Motorola Morrison. It is clear the “Sholes” is the higher end device and it could be Android’s flagship phone for 2009. Verizon has been trying to get their hands on the iPhone, but it won’t be happening anytime soon. The “Sholes” is Verizon’s best opportunity to have a device that
directly competes with Apple.

There are hints floating around that suggest “Sholes” could provide real hype for Verizon.
Why was the CPU info mysteriously left off the leaked specs of “Sholes”? Could it be that the phone will be based off the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform? This would provide the needed fire power to speed up Android. We know a CPU bump is coming after getting four Android phones in a row with the older Qualcomm MSM72xx processor. The Snapdragon platform, with a 1 GHz CPU, is the next logical step for Android.

Before recently joining Motorola as its new CEO, Sanjay Jha spent over a decade working at Qualcomm. He led and oversaw the development of five generations of modem and cell site chipsets, before becoming COO of Qualcomm. I believe Mr. Jha has been so secretive about Motorola’s handset design because they have a big surprise for us.

We have seen Windows Mobile phones (Toshiba TG01) based off Snapdragon already pass the FCC. Is it that hard to believe Motorola will unveil a 1 GHz Android phone? They need to make an impression with their first Android device and I believe it will be the Snapdragon platform.
The possible addition of the Android 2.0 stamp could add even more momentum to Motorola’s first Android phone. As we have learned over the last month, Android 2.0 is just marketing fluff and Google can whip it out whenever they choose. Who knows if the Donut branch will even be a release. Google could choose to hold off their next update to include new features being worked on in Eclair and Flan.

All of these Android releases are carefully coordinated between Google, the carriers, and the handset manufacturers. Google could have promised Verizon the Android 2.0 moniker to launch their first phone. This may explain why they stopped updating their roadmap if marketing deals are still being done behind closed doors.
All we can do is wait till September as the speculation builds. What do you think Motorola has up their sleeve?

Update 7/31:

Motorola could preview their upcoming devices at the Mobilize 09 event on September 10, 2009. The keynote lineup includes Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha and T-Mobile CTO Cole Brodman. Qualcomm COO Len Lauer is also on the speaker lineup. That sounds like an event I would like to attend.

LG officially unveils its new Chocolate, the BL40

LG officially unveils its new Chocolate, the BL40

LG officially unveiled the latest addition to its Black Label series, the BL40 Chocolate. A bit of deja vu as this handset has already starred in its own photo shoot and made its unofficial YouTube debut. The red-trimmed handset has a 4-inch wide screen 800×345 pixel display with a unique 21:9 aspect ratio, 5 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, 7.2Mbps UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, and aGPS. As far as release details, unfortunately all we know about this sleek and sexy handset is that it will debut in Q3 2009 in 54 countries worldwide. All else aside, we can’t wait to see how typing on this bad boy works out considering how long and thin it is. Hit the jump for a few more press photos.

Samsung Jet announcement!

Video: Samsung Jet announcement makes me want one of these!

Don’t know how we missed this video from Samsung’s Jet announcement, but it’s cool and we’re going with it, even if we’re late. The clip is Minority Report-like and apparently Samsung used technology from Korean firm D’strict. It combines infrared motion sensing and 3D imagery a la Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Natal… Enough said, push the play button above, if you still haven’t!

Smartest Cover for the BlackBerry Storm

Clear Shots: Smartest Cover for the BlackBerry Storm

After I mentioned the ‘Smartest Cover’ for the BlackBerry Storm yesterday, I wasn’t too surprised to wake up and notice an email from the team over at Smartest Cover. I had raised concerns directly to them about the lack of quality images of the product… and sure enough, they came through for me. Hopefully these images give a clear picture of how the ‘cover’ works. You can see the raised bumps, much like the ‘F’ and ‘J’ keys carry on most keyboards.
I can’t say for certain that the covers will work, but having used a Storm for some time now, I can’t see it hurting at all. If anything, I’d guess moderate to large gains in typing speed and accuracy would be realized (just a hunch).

Again, if you’d like to learn more or pick up a package of 3 for $13.99, head on over to smartestcover.com. Landscape and SureType versions are available.

Blog test from my Blackberry

Poll: Which Currently Available or Announced BlackBerry Smartphone do you Own or Plan to Buy?

Poll: Which Currently Available or Announced BlackBerry Smartphone do you Own or Plan to Buy?

How is it that we've never run a poll here on the blogs?
That just seems soooo wrong. It's time to change that! I think we can have a lot of fun here by running both standalone polls and by tieing polls in at the end of blog posts.
So get your polling thumbs ready....
It only makes sense for our first poll that we start with the basics... which BlackBerry do you currently own or plan to buy. Now..I know a lot of you either own multiple BlackBerry smartphones or are using an upcoming device that you shouldn't really be using. So if you own multiple devices or are about to upgrade, pick the one you're using/plan to be using the most. And if you're lucky enough to be rocking a model that err.. doesn't exist yet (onyx anyone??) then just pick the Older or Other BlackBerry option...

BlackBerry Tip: Use Gmail to archive deleted BlackBerry messages

BlackBerry Tip: Use Gmail to archive deleted BlackBerry messages

One of the downsides of being a BIS user is that you don’t get the ability to archive your deleted BlackBerry emails. Well there is a way to do it and it has changed my life.
If you’re like me, you have drunk the Cool-Aid and you’re using Google Calendar, Reader, Docs (which I’m writing this on right now) etc. Even though you love Google products, you can’t make the jump to Android because, when it comes to communication and getting things done, nothing is better than BlackBerry.
There have been rumors of a BlackBerry plugin for Gmail for ages, but it’s taking a long time and we’re not hearing much news about it. Until then, here is a solution for archiving your deleted BlackBerry emails using Gmail.

First, we’ve got to let the BIS know to use IMAP and nothing but IMAP.
1) Log in to your BIS account. If you already have your
2) If you see your Gmail account, go ahead and delete it.
3) Click “Set Up Account.” On the next page, type in your email address but do not type in your password. Click ‘next.’ Choose “I will provide the settings to add this email account” and again, click ‘next.’
4) Make sure that “This is my personal email account” is selected, and hit ‘next.’ Choose “I will provide the settings to add this email account,” click ‘next’, and here’s where the magic happens.
5) Under “User name” type in your full email address: i.e. joe@gmail.com. Now you can go ahead and enter in your password. Under ‘Email server’, put in imap.gmail.com , and put your email address in the ‘email’ field. Click ‘next.’ You are now done with the BIS side of it.

Now we’re going to set up the Gmail side of things. Go ahead and log into your Gmail account.
1) In the upper-right-hand corner, click on “Settings”, and then click on the “labs” tab.
If you haven’t played with the labs, take some time, there are great things here. My personal favorite these days is the “send and archive” button. Love it.
2) Find “Advanced IMAP Controls”. Enable them.
3) Sign in and sign out of Gmail. If you have ‘Offline Gmail’ enabled, Advanced IMAP may take a few minutes. Be patient.
4) Click on “Settings” again, and then choose “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”. Make sure that IMAP is enabled.
5) Click on “Do Not Automatically Expunge Messages”, and finally, “When a message is expunged from the last visible IMAP folder”, and choose “Archive the Message”. Ok, you’re almost done! Go ahead and ’save’ your settings.
6) Finally, click on “Settings” again, choose the “Labels” tab, and under “Show in IMAP” make sure that ‘Trash’ is unchecked.

That’s it, you’re done! Go ahead and test it out to make sure it works.
From now on, when you delete a message from your BlackBerry, it should Archive it in your Gmail. Enjoy!

Rogers Wireless begins 21Mbps HSPA+ rollout, a first in North America

Rogers Wireless begins 21Mbps HSPA+ rollout, a first in North America:

"It may not have beaten the likes of Australia's Telstra to the 21Mbps mark, but Rogers Wireless has still earned some pretty impressive bragging rights as the first carrier in North America to move on up to HSPA+, which (theoretically) more than doubles the maximum speeds of the current 7.2 Mbps network. According to Rogers, it'll begin to 'progressively increase' download speeds starting in August, with the Greater Toronto Area expectedly first on deck to get a taste of all that bandwidth -- although Rogers does say that it'll 'expand quickly over the coming months' in other cities across Canada and eventually cover the entire country. Those south of the border shouldn''t feel too glum about the situation however, as last we had heard, AT&T was 'likely' to bypass HSPA+ altogether and move straight from 7.2Mbps to LTE and the ludicrous speeds it promises."

Advanced Forwarder for Blackberry

BlackBerryInsight:

"Advanced Forwarder is a reliable and instant call and SMS forwarding application for your BlackBerry devices. This useful utility allows the user to forward incoming calls and also SMS to any other mobile number. This feature can be enabled and disabled instantly according to the user’s convenience. It can be done from the phone itself or from any other number by sending a SMS command. The Advanced Forward application can be useful in several situations. Maybe you have left your cell phone at home, but you cannot afford to miss the incoming calls. This application comes handy in such situation. Again, in case you want to carry one single set instead of multiple one, then also you can divert the calls to the number you wish to carry. In case you are busy, then your calls can be diverted to someone else phone to handle. Thus, this is a pretty handy application in several situations.
Whenever a call comes to a phone that has this application enabled, the call automatically gets forwarded to the number that is set by this application. The caller never gets a hint of this happening. Again the SMS received gets forwarded instantly and thus, the SMS is available on both the forwarding and the forwarded device.
The Advanced Forwarder application maintains an event log of all forwarded communication. Both calls and text messages are stored in the event log along with a list of commands that have been given to the phone."
This application is much secured. This has a password protection feature that prevents any unsolicited access to the Advanced Forwarder. For a remote activation to be successful, the commands given remotely must contain the password as one data. Anytime the application is accessed, password has to be entered.
What makes Advanced Forwarder different? This service can be activated and deactivated from a remote location. Activation and deactivation can also be done locally.
Minimum Requirements of Advanced ForwarderBlackBerry phone with Operating system version 4.2.1 or higher is required for the application. Minimum display required for proper working of the application is 160×160.This application offers a number of benefits at a price of only $19.90. Even though the rate may sound high, but when you compare the benefits available, you might think otherwise. So, get your Advanced Forwarder today and make it a point that you do not miss out on anything.

"I am not a big fan of Time myself but I have a few friends who read it cover to cover. It looks like they teamed up with Polar Mobile to release a mobile app with their content. The app seems to work well on the Storm and Bold but people are reporting issues on the Tour and older devices.

"Desktop Manager 5.0.0.8 made a pretty splash when the BlackBerry Tour was released. I got quite a few emails these past few days that RIM has been pushing out Desktop Manager 5.0.0.11 as an automatic update. Until now I just assumed it was a bug fix but did not know what it fixed exactly so I did not mention it.
Tom and a few other readers sent in tips pointing to the fact that this version fixes some of the database backup errors causing problems in 5.0. For example when doing a backup, instead of failing when there is an error, it will now tell you what database failed and offer to continue and complete the backup. Now that is worth mentioning!
You can pickup 5.0.0.8 directly now or through Verizon (use any number) and then check for updates to get this version"

"The all new OtterBox Commuter Case for the BlackBerry Storm has turned up on their site over the last couple of days.

The pricing is listed at $34.95 (USD) which would support the mid-range theory. They are not available just yet but you can register your interest and get a notification at http://www.otterbox.com/blackberry-cases/blackberry-storm-commuter-case/

How to delete applications on your BlackBerry | BB Geeks

How to delete applications on your BlackBerry BB Geeks: "Every so often here, we go over BlackBerry quick tips, little tidbits that can make your BlackBerry life easier. Some of these are more advanced, but we also like to go over the basics. Today is one of those instances. In searching through the site yesterday, I realized we didn’t have a bit on how to delete applications from your BlackBerry. So after the jump we’ll go through the basic process.
First, go to Options.
Then, go to Advanced Options.
Finally, click on Applications.
You’ll see a notice that your BlackBerry is building an applications list. On the other end you’ll see a big huge list, containing core applications and some things you might not recognize. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: if you do not know what it is, do not delete it.
Scroll down to find the application you’d like to delete. Once it’s highlighted, hit the Menu key. You’ll see a number of options, but all we’re interested in now is the obvious one: Delete. Click it, and you’ll get confirmation. Click Yes, and it will delete the application.
Afterward you’ll be prompted to reset your BlackBerry. If you plan to delete multiple applications, say no. Say yes after the last application you’re going to delete. A reset clears the application out of device memory."
